Na primeiríssima vez que você tocar o BlackBerry Storm – o primeiro smartphone da RIM totalmente touchscreen e sem teclado –, tomará um susto. Não importa quantas vezes seus dedos dancem na tela da maneira que você se acostumou a fazer com outras touchscreen, nada acontecerá. Ao menos, não até você pressionar a tela para baixo e sentir um clique. Sim, a tela é um botão gigante, que você precisa esmurrar para basicamente qualquer ação, até mesmo a cada letra que você digita, quebrando totalmente o paradigma das touchscreen. Surpreendentemente, funciona.

Embora esse seja o recurso que define o Storm, o aparelho é muito, muito mais do que isso que a RIM desgraciosamente chama de ClickThrough. O termo “iPhone killer”é usado sem muito critério por blogueiros e jornalistas (inclusive nós) para descrever qualquer telefone com uma touchscreen, mas, ao tentar realmente inovar em vez de imitar, a RIM construiu o aparelho mais merecedor do título até agora. Com uma inovadora interface de uso multitoque (graças ao ClickThrough), ele funciona na rede 3G EV-DO da Verizon nos EUA e em qualquer rede 3G GSM HSPA no exterior – é um smartphone global de verdade. OK, talvez nunca venha a existir um “iPhone killer” – é uma idéia estúpida mesmo –, mas, baseado em nosso breve tempo com ele, parece que o BlackBerry Storm realmente se garante contra qualquer outro handset de destaque do mercado.

Digitando na touchscreen com clique
Vamos falar mais sobre o ClickTrough, já que usar o Storm significa usar o ClickTrough. O co-CEO da RIM Mike Lazaridis, que notoriamente disse não poder digitar em um pedaço de vidro, disse-me que o recurso ficou por anos em desenvolvimento enquanto eles procuravam evoluir para além do trackball e fazer algo inédito para qualquer touchscreen: separar navegação de confirmação. Assim, você precisa apertar a tela como um botão toda vez que fizer algo. Leva um tempo para se acostumar a digitar com isso, pois você precisa se reeducar a fim de, a cada letra inserida, levantar seu polegar da tela para deixá-la voltar à posição original. Como você não pode “fluir” em uma seqüência contínua e fica esmurrando uma série de cliques, é difícil dizer, com o curto tempo que passei com o aparelho, o quão rápido você pode ser depois de completamente reeducado. É uma sensação única e elegantemente harmoniosa; eu gostei, mas posso ver facilmente pessoas detestando.

Operando
Mais sobre navegação. Um incômodo ao digitar é que as letras são destacadas em azul, em vez de serem ampliadas em um pop-up (como no iPhone ou no LG Vu), então elas podem ficar escondidas se você tiver dedos gordos. Uma das inconsistências estranhas (há algumas) com a necessidade de clicar para executar uma ação ocorre com o copiar-e-colar, que demorou alguns segundos para rolar por causa do longo processo de pegar e arrastar que foi usado quando o recurso foi demonstrado para mim – eles curiosamente não me mostraram o método com multitoque exibido no manual do usuário que vazou, mas depois a RIM confirmou que ele estaria presente. Também cabe dizer que ele tem um acelerômetro (que pareceu ser um fio de cabelo mais sensível do que o do iPhone), ou seja, ele detecta se a orientação utilizada é paisagem ou retrato – e usa teclado QWERTY para entrada de texto na primeira e SureType na segunda.

Apesar de o sistema operacional ter sido otimizado para seus dedos imundos, todos os paradigmas padrões de navegação do BlackBerry continuam em jogo – os quatro botões abaixo da tela (menu, back, send, end) são muito utilizados, como em um aparelho comum da linha.

Navegação e rede
O browser traz melhoras em relação à versão do Bold e é até mais competente ao renderizar HTML. Você tem diferentes maneiras de navegar por uma página, mas a mais singular é a que faz uso de toda a tela como um trackpad – o cursor aparece, você coloca seu dedo em qualquer lugar da tela e faz movimentos, exatamente como em um notebook. Ele é sensível ao contexto, ou seja, age conforme a situação, procura fazer o que supostamente deve fazer quando você clica em um link ou em outras coisas. Houve uns problemas com um campo de entrada de texto no navegador e outras instabilidades, mas obviamente não se trata da versão final. A preocupação da RIM com a experiência do usuário é muito aparente, por isso espero que tudo esteja arrumado quando a versão final sair, em novembro, embora eu não tenha muita expectativa sobre suporte a Flash.

De modo geral foi uma experiência de navegação bem sólida, mas uma coisa a ser considerada é que, conforme os padrões da Verizon, você navega por EV-DO, não Wi-Fi, pois o aparelho não tem suporte a este último. A falta de Wi-Fi é um dos maiores reveses do celular, não importa quão boa a rede da Verizon possa ser. Juntar EV-DO e HSPA em um único telefone é algo realmente digno de admiração, mas por que eles não poderiam meter um Wi-Fi ali também?

Tela, multimídia e recursos para o consumidor
A tela é deslumbrante. Eu não vi o HTC Touch HD pessoalmente, mas, tirando isso, a maravilha com resolução de 480 x 360 e 184 pixels por polegada pode ser a melhor tela do mercado. Tem brilho e contraste fortes, cores bonitas e ângulo de visão absurdo. Acho que eu poderia assistir a “Homem de Ferro” inteiro nele. A navegação de mídia não é tão intuitiva quanto a do iPhone; basicamente reutiliza a interface usual do BlackBerry, mas, de qualquer maneira, não é difícil de se virar com ela. E a RIM claramente pretende levar a luta a sério – o Storm suporta vários formatos de áudio e vídeo, virá com cartão de memória microSD de 8 GB e aceita Bluetooth estério.

O Storm é o aparelho da RIM mais voltado ao consumidor, mas ainda tem um coração de BlackBerry, com todos os recursos corporativos padrões, como edição de documentos do Office, pesquisa integral de e-mails, suporte ao Exchange – tudo o que um usuário de BlackBerry espera. Sem falar em toques menores, como o BlackBerry Maps, o BrickBreaker e o Facebook pré-instalados.

Você já viu em vazamentos a loja de aplicativos, e a RIM contou-me que haverá um kit de desenvolvimento de software (SDK). A estranha explosão de aplicativos para BlackBerry voltados ao consumidor há um tempo não era uma coincidência – a RIM parece estar inteiramente consciente de que uma forte comunidade de desenvolvedores e aplicativos matadores são mais decisivos do que nunca no mercado de smartphone para o consumidor final.

Esse será o aparelho mais importante entre os modelos da Verizon, e, pelo jeito, o melhor. Algumas pessoas odiarão o ClickThrough – não é uma solução perfeita, mas é genuinamente inovadora e realmente muito boa. Algumas pessoas detestarão por não ser o iPhone (ou o G1, já que é um outro pacote de hardware/software firmemente integrado). Mas, para usuários de BlackBerry à procura de um celular com touchscreen, esse é o melhor que existe.

    Touch and Feel
    The BlackBerry Storm smartphone comes with an innovative touch-screen that actually depresses ever so slightly when the screen is pressed.
